About Iran (The Islamic Republic of Iran)
Iran, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a strategically located country in West
Asia, sharing borders with Iraq to the west, Turkey to the northwest, and Azerbaijan, Armenia, and
the Caspian Sea to the north. With a civilization dating back thousands of years, Iran has been a
center of cultural, scientific, and artistic achievements, most notably during the Persian Empire.
Today, Tehran, the capital, is the country’s economic and cultural hub, home to a growing urban
population and thriving industries.
Iran is a significant player in the global oil market, possessing one of the world’s largest
reserves of crude oil and natural gas. However, the country has also made efforts to diversify its
economy, with key sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, and technology. As of 2022, Iran’s
GDP stood at 41,349.32 crore USD, with a steady growth rate of 3.8%, demonstrating resilience
despite economic sanctions and geopolitical challenges.
Iran's energy consumption is substantial, with per capita electricity use recorded at 2,927.79 kWh,
highlighting potential for efficiency improvements. However, environmental sustainability remains a
challenge, as Iran recorded per capita CO2 emissions of 7.06 metric tons in 2022, largely due to its
reliance on fossil fuels. The government has taken steps toward renewable energy development, but
progress remains gradual.
In addition to its economic and environmental aspects, Iran is known for its deep-rooted cultural
heritage, including Persian literature, traditional architecture, and vibrant arts. The country
continues to play a vital role in global affairs, balancing economic ambitions with regional
influence. With its rich history, economic potential, and evolving energy landscape, Iran remains a
dynamic and significant nation on the world stage.
